Antique Vintage 1946 Grantline Bakelite Tube Radio

From a time when radio truly was king, this gorgeous Grantline midget only measures about 5 1/2" tall X 8" wide. An item sold by the W.T. Grant retail stores from days gone by.

This is a restored and working radio ready to display and enjoy. All paper and electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, all out of tolerance resistors were replaced, and all tubes were tested and replaced if found to be weak. A new line cord has also been added to replace the unsafe and crumbling original. Lastly, the set was aligned and then bench tested for a minimum of 48 hours to ensure reliability and peak performance. As a result of this entire process, the set sounds very warm, clear, and plays without hum.

Each of my radio cabinets are hand polished by me, investing significant time and attention to every detail to bring you a set worth displaying in your collection or accenting your home decor. The polished cabinet is a wonderful dark chocolate colored bakelite. The cabinet has no chips but unfortunately there are a couple of very fine hairline cracks to be noted. I have photographed each of them individually and have them circled in red. Viewing the photos, you can see that these are very hard to notice. They were equally hard to photograph. These two cracks are the true definition of 'hairline'. In fact, I briefly thought they were scratches when I was polishing the cabinet. Often times, when other sellers use the word "hairline" to describe a crack in a radio cabinet, you can drive a truck through the massive gap they show in their photos. Not here. No gaps and no sloppy glue repairs. Make no mistake, the two flaws that you see here in my photos, are truly only hairline cracks. Those of you who have shown continued interest in my restored radios know that it is extremely rare that I offer a radio with any cracks in the cabinet, but I felt this midget radio should be an exception since they so very rarely come up for sale and because the flaws noted above are minimal at best.

What you are looking at is the original hand polished bakelite with all of its natural qualities and textures still retained. No oils, lacquers, or gloss topcoats were used. None of that here, or on any other of my radio restorations. The knobs are original to the set and nicely compliment the curvature of the deco lines running down the front of the set. They also have a nice chocolate swirl to them. The knobs have also been cleaned, detailed, and polished to a beautifully natural gloss with no lacquers, coatings, cracks, or chips.

The set comes with the original metal back which is not something that you see very often on restored radios these days. Other sellers use reproduction backs or worse, nothing at all. On the back you will notice a new long wire antenna. There are no difficult installations to worry about here because no additional hook-up need ever be made. Simply unravel the wire and drop it behind the set and you're good to go. Easy. The dial scale is glass, original, and displays color combinations that are easy on the eyes while keeping with the theme of the design. Consisting of an ivory or pale yellow background accented with gold numbering. The white painted dial pointer is placed against a lovely hunter green background that is accentuated with a brass knurled fastener in the center. These details are all original to the set. All numbers are easy to read with no flaking and are warmly illuminated when the set is on.

Please view all photos. Overall beautiful condition, making it a sure conversation starter that's ready to display and enjoy in your home or office.
