I just rescued this radio from an estate sale. I plugged it in and it worked great. I was able to pick up two AM stations in my area. Some minor distortion on the speaker, but I think I may have not been totally tuned in. It sounded good to me!!

This one was out in the garage, so its going to need a thorough cleaning. I think the case will come clean no problem, but you can see in the picutres, the cord is pretty grimey. Maybe some soap and water or an alcohol pad will clean it up. A couple marks topside, and I took a picutre of each.

I will ship it at actual cost worldwide. It weighs almost 7 pounds unpacked and the box will be 9 and change with all the packing material to keep it safe. Just wanted you to be aware of why shipping costs what it does. I dont charge for any material or handling, just the weight of the package.

Radio is approx. 10.5x6.2x5.4 inches. I couldn't find another one on Ebay, so when I did an internet search, I saw some magazine ads for this model in both 1947 and 1948 magazines.

I ask that you pay within 3 days of end of sale. Ebay automatically files a non-pay claim at the end of four days. I don't do it to be a jerk, I do it as a reminder for you to pay. Thanks for understanding! If you have something come up, just let me know!

Vintage Short Wave Tube Radio General Electric Antique WORKS!

This is such a cute vintage radio! It works too, gets better reception than my clock radio. It is a General Electric, Shortwave Megacycles, Standard Kilocycles. It is a used vintage item, but is in good shape, NO breaks, chips or cracks. Radio measures 13 in. x 8 in. Not sure what year this was made, maybe 40s or 50s,???? For the serious collector, offered here is a Fairbanks-Morse Model 58-T1 broadcast and shortwave radio made in 1936. Featuring very large colorful "airplane dials" and quality construction, Fairbanks-Morse sets are desirable, scarce and infrequently come up for sale. This set has just received an extensive restoration. Condition is very good overall but not  "Museum Quality". I sincerely believe the restoration will satisfy all but the most "purist" of collectors.

Work Performed - the Chassis was cleaned inside and out. All worn rubber (wires, grommets, tuning drive belt, etc.) was replaced. Tubes were replaced as needed with NOS (new old stock). The dial lamps were replaced. A brand new genuine Hammond power transformer was installed. A brand new audio output transformer replaces the smaller original one. Every capacitor was replaced except for the highly reliable mica types. All resistors were replaced except for the volume control.

To update to modern safety standards a new power cord and fuse were added along with a "Y1" safety capacitor for shock hazard protection. A modern full range large ceramic magnet speaker, producing strong bass and excellent music reproduction, substitutes for the original electrodynamic loudspeaker. The old loudspeaker still functions as a filter choke and can be seen inside the case on the far right side. Finally this set was realigned using an oscilloscope to maximize performance.

The Cabinet - is completely intact; all of the original glue and joints remaining solid and firm. There is no back cover. The veneer is intact, with no peeling or missing pieces. The original finish I preserved and restored as best as possible with Kramer’s Antique Improver. The finish shows some wear around the controls and the edges visible in bright light. The original black trim was badly worn and repainting was necessary. The metal escutcheon was cleaned  and polished carefully to remove built up grime but otherwise maintain its original antique condition.  The dial and glass are original and not reproductions. There is a slight scratch on the lower dial caused by the carelessness of a repairman or previous owners.  The original grille cloth was missing and I replaced it with a white tweed material; the only liberty that I took in otherwise maintaining the original appearance. 

Reception - This set was test played over several days and checked for problems such as overheating. It now receives well on all bands using only a 15 foot indoor wire antenna. It receives particularly well on the 41 and 49 meter shortwave bands with stations crowded tightly together in the evenings. For best reception, please remember that 1930's radios were designed to be used with 75 to 100 foot longwire outdoor antennas. The original volume control occasionally produces a "whistle" at its lowest setting due to minor mechanical wear.  The control was cleaned and lubricated and it is operating smoothly. Adjusting the volume control just slightly immediately stops the "whistle".

1940 Vtg Antique Bakelite Emerson 303 Tube AM Radio Recently Restored Works Well

This is a Emerson 5-tube radio that is now in good working condition. It is a compact, tabletop model. The cabinet is a shiny, deep brown, marbled Bakelite with gold accents. Model number 303 made in 1940. Receives AM only, 550-1600.

The cosmetics of this piece are just marvelous. I like the styling of the speaker grill that wraps around the corner. Reminiscent of art deco, with the hard rectangular shapes intermixed with rounded corners. The Bakelite cabinet really shines, but there are two small chips at the back edge of the cabinet. Both are tiny and only visible upon close inspection. You can see one of them in the side shot of the radio and then in a close-up photo, the other chip is on the top edge and considerably smaller.

The dial is face is bright and shiny, the lettering is all intact, the dial cover is clear and clean. There is a spot, about the size of a pencil point, where some gold on the dial face has worn. The knobs are present and original. The back is missing. These backs were just a thin fiberboard and they rarely last over the decades.

The radio has been serviced and all is in good working order. There is no hum or scratchy controls. The original AC cord is still on the radio and is supple and not cracked.

All in all, a good-looking radio with great mid-century styling.

The radio has been tested: WORKSWhat started as a project, ended when I purchased a “mint” black dial Zenith…so I am passing this one on to be redone.I did some cleaning and minor repairs. I did not “refurbish” or “rebuild” it. Was not necessary. I just did some repairs. I do not know if all the original covers are on the chassis. The power cord was replaced.Old paper capacitors were replaced.The speaker was replaced…the speaker is NOT the original model. It is an NOS old Zenith speaker that my tech friend “ohm-ed” to meet the original specifications.If the tubes were bad…they were replaced. Not all tubes are new, but they all work.Schematic included.At the time of testing and listing, all tubes work.Speaker is loud and clear.Speaker grill cloth is as shown in pictures.All four knobs are present.The dial face lights up…all bulbs were replaced by me.The inside of the cabinet was cleaned/vacuumed/air blown by me.Missing one screw on bottom…washers added for stability.The cabinet needs refinishing…refer to pictures...there is one wooden decorative button missing on the lower front.Dimensions (approximate): 11 1/2” wide x 8” deep x 16” tall.Pictures taken with/without flash to better show detail and cosmetic condition.eBay allows 12 pictures…you got’em.Shipping is flat rated, will include insurance, I will pick up the rest of the shipping charges, including boxes and stuffing.NOTE: The follwing questions were asked and ansered 8/25/2011...I just forgot to celect the "post" button prior to sending the response.

Q...Is the veneer iifted on the top back of the cabinet? Any chips or cracks in the veneer?
A...Hello and thank you for your questions. The veneer is lifting in the rear of the top piece. This can be seen best in the picture of the back taken without flash (the second picture of the back). I did not notice any chips or cracks in the veneer. If I were going to finish redoing the cabinet, I would lift and reseat the top pieces and strip/sand/restain the rest. Please note that there is one wooden "button" missing in the front, just up from the bottom. That piece would have to be made and placed. I hope this information was helpful. -A
